what is private utility locate and why do i need it?

 Before starting any digging project, contacting Ontario One Call is the first step. Public underground utilities must be marked to help prevent costly and dangerous damage. Ontario One Call only locates public utilities; any private underground services require a licensed private locator.

Most utility line runs close to the road, those utilities are mostly own by the utility operator, typically refer as the main. The main is the supplies line for water, power, gas and telecommunication services. In addition any line that connects from the main to your home is also a public utility.


It would include (Phone, Tv cable and internet). You would often see a pedestal Infront of the property that would aloud the technician access to connection points of the telecommunication line. However public lines usually extend beyond the pedestal un to the line enter the home. If a homeowner has extended telecom line connected to electric garage or building that line would be a private utility line.



The point of service is the water meter. Typically your water meter is in the front of your property and with a heavy metal lid. The service coming from the main to you water meter is public line. Now from your water meter servicing your home, that would private utility line.


The point of service is likely on gas meter that is connected to the home. In addition to the main line near the road, the line running from the main to service meter is most likely also a public utility line. Any service line extending behind the gas meter, such as fire pits, bbq, gas burning lamps, pools, hot tubs, generators or other dwellings would be private utility line.



Often the power meter is connected to your home. That meter could be service buried or on the air from the main power supplied from the local provider. The main line buried or power line it is consider a Public Utility and would service to your home via buried or in the air to your power meter in your home that service line from main to your home regardless if is buried or in the air is also public utility line cover by Ontario One Call. When would the utility line would be consider private is when you may have power line extended behind the power meter feeding an alternative dwelling, garage, outside lights, Boat house, shed, septic tank, irrigation system and any other power service lines including abandon ones.
